They are lovingly maintained and raced by their owners to an 82 year old, one-design measurement rule. These are beautiful, 30 foot, classic wooden sloops. It's a Challenge Cup, with the holder accepting a challenge annually from another yacht club. Perpetual Cup is held in Trust by the two senior yacht clubs of San Francisco Bay - the Corinthian Yacht Club (CYC) and the San Francisco Yacht Club (SFYC). This year marks the 91st anniversary of the first Bird Boat, a classic wooden sailboat specifically designed for racing on San Francisco Bay and the first one design fleet on the West Coast, while the San Francisco Perpetual Trophy, first raced on the bay in 1895, is purported to be the second oldest match-racing trophy in sailing behind only the America's Cup. The class is easily the oldest one-design class on the West Coast, and is among the top 5, oldest classes in the USA. The San Francisco Bird Boat fleet has been racing continuously on The Bay since 1922. (See new photos at the end of the gallery) Refinishing the surfaces in the cockpit is next. She does not leak a drop from her bottom!. She is the only Bird with a barrel transom. This is a very strong vessel, with a solid and tight hull and rebuilt cockpit and transom.
